CONTRIBUTOR GUIDELINES
Bomber Legends eMagazine is an internet based publication
focusing on preserving the memories and history of bomber type (air to ground) aircraft and
their crews (pilots, gunners, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers, radio operators),
support personnel who maintained these aircraft, as well as those who built these aircraft
in factories. The majority of the featured stories are firsthand accounts, written by the
veterans themselves.
If you were involved with bomber aircraft of any type, nationally
or internationally, we wish to hear from you. You could have built them, maintained them or flew
in them. Tell us a story. Your story is important, and it is unique because it is yours. Every
crewmember in a bomber saw the same incident from their individual perspective.
Stories about life in general in and around aircraft are most
welcome. We wish to hear about being awaken at 3 a.m., only to have to force down powered eggs
and spam, or SOS. Being briefed on a mission and sweating it out at the plane while waiting for
the fog to lift. Missions in the black of night over the Pacific, or working in a factory lit up
like daylight producing aircraft 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. How orders would come down to
load ten 500-lb. bombs for a long range mission, but you choose to load eight bombs and add extra
fuel, instead, to give your crew a better chance of making it home. The human history of military
aviation is slipping away from us, and we wish to capture those firsthand stories before it's too
late.
Write it in your own words as if you were telling someone a story
and please send it in to us. Veterans, please include your rank, unit, position and type aircraft.
Include photos if you can. (Please see below for submitting photos). We can't promise that your
letter or story will make into the web site immediately, but we will schedule it in as soon as
possible. If you need help or have questions, please email us at
info@bomberlegends.com.
We are also looking for articles about renovation projects, research
efforts, and upcoming crew and unit reunions.
typical issue of Bomber Legends eMagazine will include, among other features:
Main story: The main story is typically around 2,500 to 3,000
words, (approx. 8 pages, double-spaced). Article should include several photographs. Color photographs
are preferred, but not required.
Secondary stories We will include up to four shorter stories per
issue, usually around 1,500 words. A least two photographs should accompany the stories. Black & white
or color is fine.
Bomber Talk (letters): Letters submitted can be on any subject,
so long as they somehow relate to bomber aircraft. Subject matter can focus on individuals, past
missions, research projects, paint schemes; just about any subject. However, we reserve the right to
edit letters for brevity. Photos may be included with the letter for publication.
Bomber News: News events involving bomber aircraft from around
the world such as: the movement of aircraft, sales, restoration projects, and dedications. Individuals
or organizations may submit material.
Bomber Events: Open houses, air shows and so on are featured
here. Again, this area is open to individuals and organizations.
Tech Talk: This section of the magazine will focus on a specific
technical part of a bomber aircraft. Possible stories could include the auxiliary power unit of the
B-24, or the remote control fire control system on the B-29. The less known a system is, the more we
would like to see an article on it. Included should be photos and technical drawings. Article length
should be around 1,000 words, or less. Technical jargon is a plus.
Unit History: This section is a short history of a specific
unit. This can be at the group level, squadron level, or even a smaller organization. Photos, or
artwork should be included to help describe the unit history. Article length should be around 1,000
words, or less.
COMPENSATION: Because of the "conversation" nature
of this emagazine, and the material is available to everyone at no cost, we do not pay compensation
for stories or articles submitted.
SUBMITTING STORIES: Material for publication will be gladly
accepted in any means convenient to you (e.g. on a 3.5-inch floppy disk, either Mac or PC format, a
Zip 100 disk, a CD or DVD, by e-mail, or typed). Please enclose a printed copy of your work with the
disk just in case the computer can't read it. If it's easier to handwrite the letter, please make it
as legible as possible, as we need to re-type your story for publication. There also may be delays
in publishing your handwritten submission.
All photographs, material and stories submitted to Bomber Legends or
the B-24 Liberator Club become the property of Bomber Legends, unless specified to be returned. Bomber
Legends will make every possible effort to protect all material submitted for publication while at our
facility.
SUBMITTING PHOTOGRAPHS: For you WWII veterans, we understand
that many of the photos that you took during the War were taken with your personal cameras. You probably
never dreamed that the photos would be sought-after for publication. Those quick "snap shots"
of your favorite memories or historical moments are what captures history for future generations.
We prefer first-generation prints when ever possible. Digitized images
on CD or DVD are welcome. You must be able to verify ownership of the photograph. If it is in the public
domain, that must be clear. Include captions for your photographs and photo credits. Please attempt to
use photos that have not been repeatedly printed in other publications. If you have written an article
and are in need of photos, maybe we can help, just contact us. And again, we will make every effort to
protect your photographs while at our facility. Unless you request them to be returned, all photographs
become the property of Bomber Legends.
Please ship material by a traceable means such as: UPS, FedEx, or
certified USPS. Bomber Legends is not responsible for losses during shipment./P>
